Make the Most of Shoulder Season

Not sure what shoulder season is? It’s the time during spring and fall when the temperatures fluctuate wildly during the day and into the evening. It may be in the 50s or even 40s when you wake up, only to rebound into the upper 70s and 80s long into November. These crazy temperature swings can wreak havoc on your HVAC unit. Read on for our expert tips to ensure that your ac unit keeps you cool and warm when you want it to.

Use a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat not only gives you peace of mind but also brings about cost savings. You’ll have to train yourself not to reset it during the day, but if you can stick with preset temperatures, you save energy by letting the machine run efficiently. When you set your thermostat to a certain temperature, you can go about the rest of your day, not worrying about it. We would recommend recalibrating your thermostat each time the new season changes to make sure it’s working at its best.

One other tip to maximize your unit? Invest in a smart thermostat. Powered by Wifi, it monitors your habits and makes automatic adjustments while still maintaining your comfort levels. Most of these units also have outdoor sensors that will change as the weather outside changes, so you don’t even have to think about it.

Agree to Disagree

It may go without saying, but your ideal temperature is not everyone else’s ideal temperature. Unless you live alone, you’ll need to come to a consensus with everyone in your house about what temperature you can all comfortably get used to. When you agree to set a temperature rather than constantly adjust it, you’ll automatically make the machine work more efficiently because it doesn’t have to work as hard.

Rely on the Breeze

During the fall, we often welcome breezes from the North and overall cooler days. Take advantage of these beautiful, humid-free days by opening up your windows. You may have to keep them closed during the day if the temperatures soar, but at night, open them up and give your machine a break.

Check Your Indoor Air Quality

While we love opening our windows, if anyone in your house has allergies, it can cause issues for them. Make sure that you are keeping your ducts clean and changing your air filters to maintain your indoor air quality. Blanton & Sons can help get your ducts in working order so just ask us about it today.

Clean Your Outdoor Unit

As we prepare for fall’s true arrival, you’ll want to clean your outdoor unit. Check it for twigs, branches or any other obstructions like pine cones. Remove these and any dead leaves on top of and around your unit. You’ll also want to listen to the fan to ensure it sounds like it’s in running order. Notice anything that looks or sounds off? Give us a call, and we’ll check it out in no time.

Check Your Air Filters

When was the last time you checked your air filters? Replace your filters throughout your home and make sure that there are no leaks in the surrounding vents. Clean up any dust and debris. Check for any leaks. If you find some, call us, and we will seal those up for you.
