Servicing AC in the Spring

No matter where you reside, and especially in Charleston, having your air system maintained in the spring is the best time of year to do so. Up until now, your air conditioning has yet to work its most demanding. And while it may be operating fine now, it could be set up for failure this summer. And especially if it’s an older system.

Look at your air conditioning system and compare it to your car. You regularly take your vehicle in for service and oil changes, and an air system in a home is similar. Having your system maintained yearly will help with efficiency and cutting down costs on your electric bill and longevity… not having to shell out your savings sooner than expected on an entirely new central air system.

Consider preparing your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system for spring maintenance or join our Preventative Maintenance Plan and keep from having to think about your air system. Regular maintenance will go a long way in protecting your home and your new HVAC system.

Tasks you can do yourself:

  • Clean off the outside unit (condenser) from debris and dirt. Remember to power off the unit’s circuit if you’re using a garden hose.

  • Remove branches, or brush nearby the unit.

  • Change your filters every 1-3 months, depending on your lifestyle and if you have pets or allergies.

  • Vacuum your vents to keep them clear of dust.

Things to have your technician do:

  • Clear drain lines and pipes to avoid having standing water in your system all winter.

  • Clean the coil from dust and dirt.

  • Check the refrigerant charge, belts and pulleys, and ducts.

  • Clean and check the entire system.

  • Calibrate your thermostat to be sure the readings are accurate.
